Wednesday 16 April 2025 is Youth Homelessness Matters Day – the annual national day to raise awareness, break stereotypes, and advocate for greater supports for young people experiencing homelessness.
Youth Homelessness Matters Day is also an opportunity to pause and acknowledge the strength, determination, and spirit exhibited by young individuals facing homelessness. Despite complex barriers, we know that with the right supports young people can move out of crisis towards brighter futures.
The current situation is dire. Thousands of young lives are marred by instability, fear, and trauma, with young people experiencing the highest rates of homelessness in the country.
Across Australia in 2023-24:
- 43,226 children and young people (under 25) presented on their own to a specialist homelessness service.
- Half of those who tried to get a bed in a crisis refuge were turned away.
- 1 in 3 young people presenting alone to homelessness services identified as Indigenous.
- 29,114 young people needed long-term housing, but only 3.8% received it.
Let’s come together to demand change. Through advocacy, collaboration, and targeted investments in housing and support services, we can break the cycle of youth homelessness and ensure that every young person has access to a safe and stable place to call home.
What can you do?
This is a national emergency that demands immediate action. We CAN end child and youth homelessness together.
