Street Soccer is a free local event run by the Big Issue that takes place every Wednesday at New Farm Park for everyone aged 16+.
The Big Issue’s Street Soccer Program uses the power of sport to promote social inclusion and personal change for homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people. There are soccer events and matches, special events and initiatives and lunch and snacks are also provided. Our staff support young people to attend by offering free transport from our Fortitude Valley HUB every Wednesday.
The benefits of Street Soccer Participants include:
- Social inclusion and improved links with the community
- Improved confidence and self-esteem
- Improved mental health
- Improved physical health and fitness
- A sense of belonging
In addition, the annual Charity Street Soccer Event was held on the 1st August 2018. The event involved volunteer lawyers, Big Issue Street Soccer players and other teams in a social soccer tournament. BYS staff and young people attended the event as well as our new students who enjoyed the game and the free BBQ that was provided.
