AJ

Do you need help?

AJ bounced from place to place sleeping rough, trying to find a home.

Before I came to Brisbane Youth Service I was sleeping rough. At the time, my household was very unsupportive and unsafe. Broken windows and mental breakdowns occurred on a daily basis. Eventually I decided to self-place with family, which didn’t go to plan. But little did I know that support was just one phone call away.

Since entering BYS accommodation, life has completely turned around. No longer did I have to deal with all the hateful and derogatory comments and aggressive nature of my family. Now I had entered a much more suited environment, where I was enriched with positivity and doused in self-worth.

Furthermore, completing tasks I thought I would never have accomplished. I have legally changed my name, started my RSA and RSG, discovered my sexuality and currently looking at employment opportunities. If it wasn’t for the upmost support from the amazing youth workers, I would have given up on my aspirations entirely.

From the moment I put my swag in the trunk of the car I knew that I was finally accepted as the queer, quirky and cheeky person I truly was.

“Since entering BYS
accommodation, life has
completely turned around.”

📢 June 2025 service update

There remains a very high demand for emergency accommodation for young people and young families in Brisbane. We are working hard to create more options, but many nights, all beds are at capacity.

Your phone call might not get answered straight away, however, if you leave a message, we will get back to you as soon as possible.

If you need support, we offer a walk-in service in the afternoons.

🚶‍➡️June walk-in hours

📅 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
⏰ 1 – 4 pm

Appointments only during other opening hours

Unfortunately, arriving at our service does not mean a guaranteed place to stay. We understand this is frustrating, and we will do our best to support you. When you arrive, we’ll discuss your options, which may include housing if available. We may also provide food, transport, crisis support, referrals, and other help that fits your needs.
