Sponsors of the Furnishing Young Futures initiative came together on Thursday 18th February to put finishing touches on five homes for young people supported by Brisbane Youth Service in BHC’s new Cornwall St development.
BYS and BHC put the call out for sponsors to help furnish the units late last year and were overwhelmed by generous contributions from BHC, MinterEllison, Stokes Wheeler, Saunders Havill, Insurance Advisernet, and Knisco. The initiative raised over $36,000 to purchase furniture, white goods, and soft furnishings for the brand-new units, to get them ready for young people to move in this week.
Partner’s Day provided an opportunity for sponsors to visit the units and see the impact of their contribution first-hand. Far beyond just the purchase of furniture, it means the creation of five homes for vulnerable young people who are taking a big step in their transition into independent housing.
The allocation of units specifically for young people is part of an innovative partnership between BYS and BHC that is helping address the huge shortage of social and affordable housing for young Australians. It is the first development to be constructed under the Queensland Government’s Partnering for Growth initiative.
Residents at Cornwall St have a real opportunity for independent living while supported by BYS, equipping them with tenancy skills and importantly a demonstrated tenancy record to allow greater access to private market options down the track.
Check out the finished units below.. and THANK YOU to all of our sponsors for helping to create #NewFutures for young people!
