Art for Change – Art Therapy Program
Open Doors and Brisbane Youth Service are banding together to deliver an 8-week Art Therapy program – ‘Art for Change’. The aim of the group is to provide a space to express feelings and thoughts about change. We would like to learn more about the experience of change for young people, and to help express this through art. The program is specifically targeted at young people who identify as LGBTIQ+.
Using this artwork, we will aim to build resources to increase young people’s engagement with change, and fight stigma or misperceptions – creating resources made by young people, for young people. We want to start the conversation about change and challenge myths about change.
The Art for Change program has had an excellent response from young people. Three sessions have already been held with an average of 10 participants in each session.
Some key insights from the initial sessions have included:
- Change is hard
- Asking for help is hard
- How do I make a meaningful change
- The steps of making change
- Change can be uncomfortable
- The stages of change – where are you at?
- What happens when I start making changes that are not supported by others around me
