Small, individual actions can work together to drive big, long lasting change and have a great impact on the people around us. We can easily disregard little acts of kindness or charitable giving as being inconsequential; a tiny drop in a large ocean. But when communities work together, one small drop can be just the beginning of a very big wave.
GivingTuesday is a global movement that creates a giant wave of generosity which lasts well beyond just one day, touching the lives of people all around the world. Millions of people across the globe will come together for one day to give back to their communities, working together to create change.
Brisbane Youth Service is joining the movement in 2019, calling on the local community to make a small donation to create a big impact. The ‘Chuck Your Change’ initiative will let community members easily contribute to BYS during GivingTuesday to help create new futures for vulnerable young people in Brisbane.
Since it began in the United States seven years ago, the GivingTuesday movement has reached more than 50 countries, from Liberia to Mexico. In 2019, China, Germany and Somalia will join the movement for the first time too, while Australia gears up for its biggest ever celebration of the day.
Held annually on 3 December, GivingTuesday has inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in. In just seven years, GivingTuesday has radically changed how people think about generosity, illustrating just how much power communities have to create lasting, global change.

BYS CEO Annemaree Callander said campaigns such as GivingTuesday mean that together individuals have the power to create a big impact on the lives of vulnerable young people in the community.
“GivingTuesday celebrates generosity in our communities and we’re excited to be joining the global movement on a local level with the Chuck Your Change campaign here in Brisbane. Together, everyone’s small change can make a big difference to the lives of young people who are in crisis or experiencing homelessness,” Ms Callander said.
“Our community has the power to create better futures for young people and chucking your change is an easy way to make a big impact.
“Simply round up your loose coins in the lead-up to GivingTuesday and drop into BYS’s Fortitude Valley Hub to ‘chuck’ them into a jar or direct deposit them into the BYS fundraising bank account. You can also put a collection jar in your workplace or business and get your family and friends involved.”
GivingTuesday director Cathy Truong said GivingTuesday is a global celebration of generosity.
“It’s a dedicated day of the year when people donate their time, goods, or dollars, or the power of their voice to charities, causes and community groups,” she said.
“Research shows Giving Tuesday does more than just move donations from one day of the year to another – it brings in money that wouldn’t otherwise have been donated.
“No one owns this movement and organisations across the world have used the day to experiment with a new idea for fundraising. We hope to see a bit of creativity here as well.”

How To Participate
Round up all your small change – check behind couch cushions, kitchen drawers and in the car, and hit up your friends, family and work colleagues – then:
