ABSTRACT

Introducing the BYS Youth Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence (DFSV) Practice Framework

Informed by evidence, practitioner-directed consultation, and over 15 hours of engagement with young people, the BYS Youth DFSV Practice Framework has been developed to ensure that services reflect the realities and needs of the young people we support.

Young people impacted by DFSV often face complex challenges and have distinct needs that are different from adults. The framework recognises that these young people require holistic, wraparound, and developmentally appropriate care that centres their voices, autonomy, and safety.

The framework is underpinned by eight guiding principles: Relationship, Paced, Safety, Choices, Information, Harm Reduction, Listening, and Non-Judgemental. It outlines specialised support pathways for both those experiencing and those using violence.

This snapshot reflects our commitment to not only responding to crisis but also supporting young people in healing and recovery, recognising that violence is often a long-term and cyclical experience. Our approach prioritises dignity, cultural safety, and self-determination, aiming to break intergenerational cycles of violence and homelessness.

Our research underscores the profound impact that violence is having on young people in Brisbane. Yet, there is an absence of targeted responses for the young people and young families that BYS works with every day. Funding is needed for targeted, youth-specific DFSV interventions for crisis response, early interventions, and recovery.
