Seven questions with Clinic GP, Dr Mairaed Crawford
What do you do here at Brisbane Youth Service?
I am one of the doctors (GPs) working in the BYS clinic. I see young people for all sorts of things – mental health issues, sexual and reproductive health, arranging immunisations and medications, reviewing complex medical conditions.
The best part of your job?
Being reminded every day how resilient and resourceful young people are.
How does the work you do assist vulnerable young people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage?
Our clinic helps vulnerable young people access medical care. The medical system can be difficult to navigate and we hope to be a one-stop-shop for people who might need support in managing their physical and emotional wellbeing.
What’s the one thing everyone should know about young people and homelessness?
All young people have something to offer this world – sometimes they just need some help tapping into their strengths and letting them shine.
What’s the best part of working with young people?
They always have something to teach me
What are some of the main reasons young people seek support?
Assistance with mental health support (depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, learning difficulties), drug and alcohol problems, contraception, STI screening, unplanned pregnancies and sometimes we just see young people for a check-in and a chat
