Chuck Your Change! Brisbane Youth Service joins global GivingTuesday movement

Nov 06, 2019

Brisbane Youth Service will join a global movement in December, calling on the community to Chuck Your Change during GivingTuesday to support vulnerable young people experiencing homelessness in Brisbane.

Held on 3 December, GivingTuesday is a global day of giving which harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organisations to encourage giving and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

The Chuck Your Change campaign will help put youth homelessness in the spotlight and raise vital funds to support vulnerable and at-risk young people in Brisbane.

On GivingTuesday, millions of people across the globe mobilise to show up, give back, and change their communities. The goal is to create a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond the day and touches people around the globe.

BYS will join the global GivingTuesday movement in 2019 by calling on Brisbane to collect and donate its loose change.

Since it began in the United States seven years ago, GivingTuesday has reached more than 50 countries, from Liberia to Mexico. In 2019, China, Germany and Somalia will join the movement for the first time, and Australia is gearing up for its biggest ever celebration.

Simply round up your loose coins in the lead-up to GivingTuesday and drop into BYS’s Fortitude Valley Hub to ‘chuck’ them into a jar or direct deposit them into the BYS fundraising bank account. You can also put a collection jar in your workplace or business and get your family and friends involved.

BYS CEO Annemaree Callander said together individuals have the power to create a big impact on the lives of vulnerable young people in the community.

“GivingTuesday celebrates generosity in our communities and we’re excited to be joining the global movement on a local level with the Chuck Your Change campaign here in Brisbane. Together, everyone’s small change can make a big difference to the lives of young people who are in crisis or experiencing homelessness,” Ms Callander said.

“Our community has the power to create better futures for young people and chucking your change is an easy way to make a big impact.”

Founded in 2012, GivingTuesday has inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in. In just seven years, GivingTuesday has radically changed how we think about generosity and showed just how much power communities everywhere can create change.

“GivingTuesday is a global celebration of generosity; a dedicated day of the year when people donate their time, goods, or dollars, or the power of their voice to charities, causes and community groups,” GivingTuesday director Cathy Truong said.

“Research shows GivingTuesday does more than just move donations from one day of the year to another – it brings in money that wouldn’t otherwise have been donated.

“No one owns this movement and organisations across the world have used the day to experiment with a new idea for fundraising. We hope to see a bit of creativity here as well.”
