Board Opportunities

Board Member

We support young people and their children who are at risk of and experiencing homelessness, to secure and maintain housing, address physical and mental health challenges, establish successful relationships and support networks, and access pathways to education and employment.

Are you seeking a volunteer Board role with a values-driven, for-purpose organisation where you can support young people in our community? Do you have experience in a profession that would enable you to enhance our Board with your specialist expertise?

We are seeking applications for two volunteer part-time roles:

  • Board Member
  • Board Secretary

You’ll be a great candidate for one of these roles if you:

  • Have five years’ professional experience in one of the following areas: legal practice, ideally in commercial law; property; industrial relations/human resources; corporate governance; finance; or funding.
  • Have experience or understanding of the not-for-profit community services sector.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of governance, risk management and strategic planning.
  • Can attend monthly Board meetings (in-person or online) and other BYS events and committee meetings as required.
  • Understand the issues impacting young people and young families experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Have experience in large scale and/or commercial housing.
  • Demonstrate previous experience as a Board member (AICD or similar governance qualifications would be highly regarded).
  • For the Board Secretary role, legal practice experience is essential. The Secretary must also reside in Queensland or no more than 65 kms away from the Queensland border.

Given the work that we do there will be a few non-negotiables. You’ll need to be able to have, or obtain prior to commencement:

  • Working with Children Suitability Card [Blue Card].
  • National Police Check clearance.
  • Clear solvency check.

We value the unique backgrounds, experiences and contributions that each person brings to our community and encourage and celebrate diversity. So, even if you don’t think you quite meet all of the skills listed or tick all the boxes, we’d still love to hear from you!

If this sounds interesting, submit your cover letter telling us why you are the right person for one of these roles, along with your resume. Please specifically note in your cover letter if you are interested in the Board Secretary position. If you would like to discuss these roles further or would like to view the full position description, please contact BYS directly via hr@brisyouth.org.

Applications for this position close at 8:30am 24 June 2025.
