    Lendlease renovates Sandgate House

The support Brisbane Youth Service receives from the community makes a huge difference to what we can achieve. On 14 September we were very fortunate to have a large team of staff from Lendlease helping to renovate Sandgate House.

Sandgate House is one of our fully supported accommodation services. Brisbane Youth Service has three programs working with young people from the ages of 15 to 18. BYS Volunteer Profile – Rhian

At BYS we greatly value the work and skills that volunteers bring to the organisation.

Rhian Thomas has been volunteering with BYS for two years, commencing by providing administrative support to our fundraising efforts and since January 2016, cooking the Tuesday family lunch for young parents and their children at the Centre for Young Families.

Rhian plans the meal and cooks for six to eight families each week. She coordinates with staff from the Centre for Young Families in advance so that they can shop for what is needed. Some of the fresh produce is also delivered by Second Bite, a wonderful organisation which provides fresh food, which might otherwise go to waste, to people in need.

Brisbane Youth Service’s 40 year history

On a summer's evening, 30 November 1976, a meeting was convened by Rev Bob Griffiths and Rev Lin Reilly at the City Congregational Church. That meeting marked the beginning of Brisbane Youth Service, over 40 years ago. The new organisation in the early days had little or no funding, no premises and no paid staff but still managed to provide new futures for young people in Brisbane.
